Push-to-Start Key Programming Explained (Smart Keys, Proximity Fobs, Immobilizers)
A plain-English guide to smart keys, proximity fobs, and how programming syncs them to your car.
What is a push-to-start smart key?
A smart key (proximity fob) communicates wirelessly with your car so you can unlock and start without inserting a physical key. The car's immobilizer module verifies the key's encrypted ID before allowing start.
What does 'programming' actually do?
Programming writes the new key's encrypted ID into your vehicle's immobilizer so it's accepted as authorized. Without programming, a brand-new fob is just plastic.
What if I lose one — or all — of them?
A mobile locksmith can add a new smart key to most vehicles, and can perform all-keys-lost programming on most modern push-to-start cars without towing.
