Locksmith vs. Dealership for Car Keys: Which Is Cheaper and Faster?
When the dealer makes sense, when a mobile locksmith wins, and how to decide in under 30 seconds.
TL;DR
For nearly every car key, fob, and lost-all-keys job, a qualified mobile auto locksmith is faster and cheaper than the dealer. The dealer wins only when you need an OEM-only proprietary recall or a brand-new VIN-only key for a few specific exotic vehicles.
Cost
Dealers price OEM keys at MSRP and add programming labor on top. Locksmiths bundle parts and labor with the same dealer-level tools at a lower total.
Speed
Dealers require an appointment and often 1–3 days. Mobile locksmiths arrive same-day, often within hours, and complete most jobs in under 60 minutes on-site.
Towing
If you've lost all keys, the dealer typically requires a tow. A mobile locksmith does the entire job in your driveway.
